STORY OF TREES
Chayan Das Thakur is a talented artist hailing from the Birbhum district of West Bengal, situated near Bolpur and Shantiniketan. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Painting from the College of Art and Design under Burdwan University in the year 2018. Following his undergraduate studies, Chayan pursued a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Painting from Kalyani University, which he successfully completed in the year 2020.
Throughout his artistic journey, Chayan Das Thakur has actively participated in numerous Group Exhibitions and prestigious art events. Noteworthy among these is his participation in the Annual Exhibition of the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, as well as exhibitions held at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amritsar and various Charukala Art Exhibitions within West Bengal.
Chayan’s dedication to his craft is further evident through his involvement in diverse workshops. He attended the All India Printmaking workshop in Haryana, Kurukshetra, where he honed his skills in printmaking. Additionally, he participated in a workshop centered around Kather Putul (owl) and Gambhira Mask-making at Kalyani University, further expanding his artistic horizons.
Chayan Das Thakur’s artistic prowess and commitment have not gone unnoticed. He has received recognition through Charukala Scholarship and Lalit Kala Scholarship, which have helped support his creative endeavors. As of the present, Chayan is actively engaged in his artistic practice, working from the Lalit Kala Akademi in Kolkata. His work continues to contribute to the vibrant art scene in West Bengal and beyond.
I’ve created a video art piece to express my feelings about a horrific incident at R.G. Kar Hospital. A female intern was harassed by the principal for over a year, who demanded she compromise her values to complete her thesis. Tragically, this wasn’t an isolated incident. Multiple doctors, including the principal and his associates, were involved in the sexual harassment and murder of a lady doctor, Abhaya.
The people of West Bengal, particularly women, are demanding justice, protesting day and night. Despite 60 days passing, there’s been no conclusion from the Chief Minister, police, or CBI. The outcry extends beyond West Bengal, with people across India and abroad joining the fight for justice.
My video art captures the moment when the victim desperately wants to confide in loved ones, but feels trapped, surrounded by predators. I hope this piece contributes to the movement seeking justice for our sister
